The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has paid glowing homage to the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, hailing her as a symbol of Ghanaian women’s courage and endurance.
In a statement made on Thursday, October 23, 2025, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP expressed deep sorrow over her death, describing her as a national figure who dedicated her life to women’s emancipation and societal development.
“The late Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings, Founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement and Ghana’s longest-serving First Lady, was an epitome of the strength and resilience of Ghanaian women, particularly in political leadership and socio-economic empowerment,” the press release stated.
The party emphasised her work in promoting gender equality and increasing the well-being of women and children.
It highlighted that her diligent activism had a significant impact on historic laws such as the Intestate Succession Law (PNDCL 111), which ensures inheritance rights for women and children, as well as the inclusion of gender equality clauses in Ghana’s 1992 constitution.
The NPP described her as “a true woman who was resolute in the fight for women’s emancipation,” claiming that her legacy would continue to inspire future generations of Ghanaians.
The statement went on to say that Ghana had lost “a mother and a political colossus,” whose courage, tenacity, and leadership had a long-lasting impact on national life.
“The NPP extends its heartfelt condolences to her immediate family and commiserates with the rest of the nation for the painful loss of this illustrious citizen,” according to the party.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, was honoured for her pioneering efforts to promote women’s rights and push social change in Ghana.
